Commitment to achieving Net Zero
Astuco Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across its UK operations.
Astuco is a specialist Small and Medium Enterprise of approximately 15 people providing communications and information systems consultancy, secure infrastructure engineering and technical staffing, principally to UK Defence customers. We operate a remote-first model with no leased office estate, so our footprint is small in absolute terms and is dominated by travel to customer and partner sites. Our commitment is to manage that footprint actively and transparently, to reduce it where practicable, and to demonstrate continuous improvement.
Baseline emissions footprint
Baseline year: 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2026 (Astuco financial year 2025/26). FY2025/26 is the first financial year for which Astuco has measured and reported its greenhouse gas emissions. No earlier data of comparable quality exists, so FY2025/26 is adopted as both the baseline year and the current reporting year, and will serve as the fixed baseline against which all future reductions are measured.
Emissions are calculated in carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) and cover the seven greenhouse gases named by the Kyoto Protocol: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride.
Astuco does not own or lease any premises and operates no internal combustion vehicles, so Scope 1 emissions are reported as zero. Scope 2 emissions arise solely from electricity used to charge company electric vehicles provided through Astuco's salary-sacrifice scheme.
Emissions have been calculated from Astuco's management accounts for the year using the GHG Reporting Protocol Corporate Standard and the UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting, 2025 edition. Where primary activity data was not available, business travel and commuting emissions have been calculated using the spend-based method, applying documented internal assumptions which are retained and available on request. Astuco is implementing activity-level travel data capture during FY2026/27 so that future reports rely on measured distance and energy data.
| Scope | Emissions source | tCO₂e |
|---|---|---|
| Scope 1 | Company vehicles, premises and fugitive emissions - none under operational control | 0.00 |
| Scope 2 | Purchased electricity - company electric vehicle charging (location-based) | 0.52 |
| Scope 3 | Category 4 - Upstream transportation and distribution | 0.10 |
| Scope 3 | Category 5 - Waste generated in operations | 0.12 |
| Scope 3 | Category 6 - Business travel (road, rail and accommodation) | 12.60 |
| Scope 3 | Category 7 - Employee commuting, including homeworking | 6.76 |
| Scope 3 | Category 9 - Downstream transportation and distribution - not applicable | 0.00 |
| Scope 3 | Total Scope 3 | 19.58 |
| Total | Total emissions, all reported scopes | 20.10 |
| Emissions per full-time equivalent employee | 1.55 | |
Current emissions reporting
Reporting year: 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2026 (Astuco financial year 2025/26). As FY2025/26 is the first year of measurement, current emissions are identical to the baseline emissions reported above: Scope 1 nil, Scope 2 0.52 tCO₂e, Scope 3 19.58 tCO₂e, total 20.10 tCO₂e. This plan will be refreshed and re-published within six months of each financial year end.
Emissions reduction targets
Astuco has adopted the following targets against the FY2025/26 baseline. Targets are expressed both in absolute terms and per employee, so that growth in headcount does not obscure progress.
| Milestone | Total (tCO₂e) | Per employee (tCO₂e) | Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2025/26 (baseline) | 20.10 | 1.55 | n/a |
| FY2030/31 | 10.05 | 0.77 | 50% |
| FY2035/36 | 6.03 | 0.46 | 70% |
| FY2044/45 | 2.01 | 0.15 | 90% |
| 2050 | Net Zero | Net Zero | 100% net |
Residual emissions that cannot be eliminated by 2050 will be addressed through certified carbon removals. Astuco does not use offsetting as a substitute for absolute reduction.
Carbon reduction projects
A. Completed and current measures
The following environmental management measures are in effect across Astuco's operations and will be applied when performing contracts.
- Remote-first operating model. Astuco operates without a leased office estate, removing the energy consumption associated with maintaining, heating and lighting a separate commercial office. This is the principal reason our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are close to zero.
- Electric vehicle salary-sacrifice scheme. Astuco provides an EV salary-sacrifice scheme to decarbonise the vehicles used by our people. No internal combustion company vehicles are operated.
- Video-first meetings and journey consolidation. Meetings that do not require physical presence are conducted over Microsoft Teams. Where site attendance is required, schedules are planned to consolidate attendance and colleagues attending the same site are encouraged to share transport.
- Minimal physical supply chain. Astuco's supply chain is people and expertise rather than physical goods. There is no significant procurement of hardware, consumables or materials, and all outputs are digital artefacts.
- Environmental criteria in procurement. Environmental impact is assessed as a standard criterion in supplier and procurement approval under our ESG and Sustainable Procurement Policy and Environmental Policy. Astuco does not engage suppliers who cannot demonstrate environmental awareness and compliance with relevant legislation.
- Independent sustainability assessment. Astuco is undertaking an EcoVadis sustainability assessment to validate our baseline and identify improvement areas across energy consumption, travel and supply chain practices.
B. Future planned measures
- Activity-level travel data capture. Mileage, mode and distance will be captured within Astuco's expense and timesheet processes by the end of FY2026/27, replacing spend-based estimates with measured data.
- Rail-first travel policy. A formal travel hierarchy will require rail in preference to road wherever journey time, cost and security requirements allow, with exceptions recorded and approved. Travel volume and mode will be reviewed quarterly by the Operations Director.
- Continued fleet decarbonisation. Astuco will extend take-up of the EV salary-sacrifice scheme with the objective that all vehicles used regularly for company business are ultra-low emission by FY2029/30.
- Homeworking and equipment efficiency. Guidance on energy efficiency and renewable electricity tariffs for home working will be issued annually, and end-user device refresh cycles extended to a minimum of four years with certified WEEE disposal or reuse.
- Supply chain and management system development. Astuco will request Carbon Reduction Plans from suppliers where proportionate, and will align its environmental controls to ISO 14001 principles as part of the integrated management system work under way for ISO 9001 and ISO 27001.
